Completing Cornice Installation the Easy Way

Installing cornice on your own is not a difficult task if you know how it needs to be done. There are a few basic steps that you need to follow and you will be surprised at the results you get. You will require the following items to complete the cornice installation do-it-yourself project:
  1. A sharp hand saw,
  2. Cornice cement,
  3. Plaster profile mitre box,
  4. 3 empty buckets, and
  5. A medium sized trowel and hawk
If you are pursuing larger jobs, opt for cornice cement that takes longer to set so that you have additional working time. You have three varieties to choose from – 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes. Additionally, before beginning, make sure you check that the joints between the wall and the ceiling have been properly set and sanded. Call in another person who will willingly help to place the plaster profile in position.

  • Step one: Make your measurements and markings
Take the measurement of one wall from the other and cut the cornice to length with the help of the mitre box and hand saw. Depending on the size of the cornice you are using, measure from the ceiling and mark with a nail temporarily in or with a chalk line. The cornice can be installed on this marking. If you are using the highly decorative cornice, use the same principle to measure down the wall. The pattern at the end should match up for it to appear right.
  • Step two: Cornice cement mixing
Mixing cornice cement may be tricky. You need to get the correct consistency. Cornice cement must be sticky, like toothpaste. If you have the apt consistency, you will be able to apply the cornice onto the wall without using nails or screws to keep it in place. Position the cornice upside down balancing it on two of the buckets. Butter cornice edges across the complete length. For heavy, decorative cornice, it is important that you screw it in so that it can hold the weight while the cornice cement sets.
  • Step three: Setting and cleaning
Ask your helper to give you a hand and press the cornice in place. Make use of the marks you made in step one. Once you have placed it in place, instantly wipe off the joints using a rag or wet sponge. It may not be easy to clean the cornice cement once it has set and your cornice installation is complete. If there are any gaps, add cement and remove excess.

Cleaning cornice

Once you have successfully installed cornice in your home, the next task that comes your way is maintaining it. Dust, dirt and nasty cobwebs commonly develop over time. And of course, you do not want the cornice to look dull and spoil the appearance of your room. The placement of cornice is generally high and therefore performing cleaning is difficult. Majority of coving and cornice are painted white allowing dirt to get emphasized. Use some lukewarm water mixed with mild detergent to softly clean the surface and make it look immaculate. Sponging it once a week will be able to give neat results.

Removing paint from cornice

A lot of times old paint also needs to be removed from cornice. You need to be careful while doing this primarily because some cornice can be delicate, especially if it is old. If you feel that the coving or cornice in your house is expensive, ask a professional to evaluate it before you go ahead to remove paint. This will help to ensure that you know what you are going to do. Original features of some buildings are extremely valuable and therefore require apt treatment with proper care and attention to make sure they do not get damaged.
