A Freight Elevator, as the name suggests is used to move freight and heavy industrial goods. These are specially made to accommodate large weights. As a result, it is natural and even encouraged that the freight elevators move slowly in comparison to the passenger lifts. It should be noted that there are two kinds of freight elevators: one which can accommodate only industrial goods, and one which can accommodate both industrial products and humans.


The average Freight Elevator has walls made of 14 to 16 gauge steel sheets while the reinforced doors typically are made of twelve-gauge steel sheets. The reason for this is simple. This type of elevator is designed specifically for heavy use. As these are mostly used in commercial establishments, these heavy-duty elevators have to carry huge loads continuously for the most part of the day. Moreover, there is always a chance of accidents blunt damage to the walls and doors. Apart from these basic measures, there are many security measures in industrial elevators such as reinforced doors and gates. An elevator will not function unless both are properly closed, and this acts as a simple but effective security measure to save the products from damage. The floorings are made to be skin proof while supporting all the heavy loads with ease.

In size, the Freight Elevator is much larger than its domestic counterparts and can carry much more loads. Moreover, they are made to be durable, tough, and long-lasting. Made from the best industrial or commercial-grade materials and technology, these freight elevators are an asset to the company it belongs to. There are three broad classes of freight elevators:
  • General Freight Loading: In this particular variety, items are placed in and removed by means of hydraulic trucks and as a general rule the weight of each item placed in such elevators should be less than 1/4th the weight of the elevator.

  • Motor Vehicle Loading:  These elevators are specially made to accommodate and transport vehicles from one level to another. These are commonly found in large car parking zones, car parking buildings with multiple levels, in airports, in-vehicle showrooms, and in industrial plants.

  • Industrial Truck Loading: This class of freight elevators is adept in transporting heavier vehicles like trucks and similar vehicles. The prerequisite before transporting is that the total weight of the load and the vehicle cannot be more than the stipulated limit and vehicles are guided or rolled into the large elevators as one single unit. There are two more subclasses of this type:
    1. Industrial Truck Loading C2 Type: The only prerequisite of using this product is that the total weight of the load and the vehicle may become 150 percent of the capacity of the lift, making it one of the most efficient loads pulling platforms in the world today.

    2. Industrial Truck Loading C3: The usage guideline for this variety is much stricter but is equally efficient.
Based on factors like loading method, a distance of vertical travel, load size and type, and amount of load that can be handled, there are three main types of Freight Elevator.
  • Hydraulic elevators: These function with the aid of a powerful pump greased with vegetable oils or industrial oils to lubricate the surface. This makes the function much more efficient and fast. The heavy-duty elevator cylinder is moved by the plunger. It is best suited from low rise to high rise buildings.

  • Traction elevators are products that function on gears. These are made in a way so as to direct power from its powerful motor which is transferred easily to the drive chamber. It is suitable for medium-sized buildings and high-rise buildings, making it one of the most used elevators.
